Dr. Clinton Smith  

Summer 2009 is Clinton Smith's second season as Resident Conductor/Coach of Opéra du Perigord and the Franco American Vocal Academy (productions include La vie parsienne, La Périchole).  He currently holds the position Assistant Conductor/Chorus master/Coach with the Minnesota Opera (productions include Il Trovatore, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Faust, the American premiere of Dove's The Adventures of Pinocchio, and Il Barbiere di Siviglia).  Past positions include resident conductor and coach of the Austrian-American Mozart Opera Academy in Salzburg, Austria (productions include Le nozze di Figaro, Zaïde, Der Schauspieldirektor, Die Zauberflöte and Bastien und Bastienne); music director of the University of Michigan Life Sciences Orchestra; assistant conductor and coach at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy (La bohème), University of Michigan Opera Theatre (Prodaná nevÄ•sta, La bohème); music director of the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society (productions include The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, Patience, The Yeomen of the Guard and The Sorcerer); assistant conductor of the University of Michigan Symphony, Philharmonia and Campus Orchestras; music director of the Starlight Symphony Orchestra, conductor of the University of Texas Undergraduate Opera (productions include Le nozze di Figaro¸ Der Schauspieldirektor and Bastien und Bastienne); and assistant conductor of the Butler Opera Theatre (Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi). Smith holds a BM from University of Texas at Austin where he studied piano and violin, MM in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Michigan, and a DMA in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Michigan. His teachers include Kenneth Kiesler, Martin Katz and Peter Bay.  He has also worked with such renowned conductors and coaches as Lorin Maazel, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jorma Panula, Gustav Meier, Larry Rachleff, Giovanni Reggioli, Mary Dibbern and Howard Watkins.
